The terms used in piano regulation and repair can be confusing. Below is a listing of the services we offer, and what they mean.

  • Fine tuning – this is what most people think of when they think “piano tuning.” It means the setting of the piano’s frequencies to the best sounding possible.
  • Chip tuning – chip tuning is the placing of piano strings close enough to in tune that your piano will stay in tune. This is often needed if it has been over a year since your last tuning.
  • Regulation – this is a broad term that means adjusting the action (the playing mechanism) in the piano so that it plays its best.
  • Repair – this is a broad term that means exactly what it sounds like. This covers broken hammers, sticking notes, dampers that won’t work (this is the part that should make a string stop sounding once you let up on the note), and much more.
  • String replacement – over the course of time, strings can wear out. If you have a string that has snapped, please let us know before we arrive at the appointment.
  • Dammp-chaser installation – Dammp-chasers are a humidity control system for pianos. Fluctuations in humidity are the number one reason why pianos go out of tune.
